Bold Colors That Are Owning the Moment

Bold Colors That Are Owning the Moment

There’s a certain energy in the atmosphere and it’s not solely due to the Nairobi dust or the May showers. It’s all about color. Bright, bold, and fearless colors. From the bustling corners of Yaya to matatu stops in Gikomba, I can see it all around. Vivid coral tops, neon yellow sneakers, ultramarine blue dresses that could halt traffic (and I truly mean it; I spotted one in Kilimani that made a boda guy slow down).

And I absolutely adore it.

I was never the type to dress in “loud” patterns. Closet used to be filled with blacks, greys, and an occasional navy tee that felt like a stretch for my personality. But something has changed perhaps it’s the post-pandemic vibe, or maybe I just grew weary of being unnoticed. Either way, vibrant color is making its presence felt.

Kenyan fashion has always embraced boldness. From beautifully designed kitenge to the mitumba items found at Toi, we’ve had a knack for making statements. However, at this moment, it’s not just about patterns. It’s about solid colors deliberate, high-impact shades that grab attention.

Bright Coral

It’s approachable yet striking enough to catch the eye. I recently snagged a vintage coral jacket from a stall in Adams and teamed it with neutral pants. The compliments? Endless. It exudes a cool, confident, and slightly artistic vibe.

Day-Glo Yellow

Not everyone has the courage to sport highlighter yellow, but if you’re someone who does go for it. I’ve noticed it on crop tops, bucket hats, and even socks in Nairobi’s trendy spots like The Thrift Social. And somehow, it all works.

Ultramarine Blue

This hue is my top pick. It’s rich, luxurious, and looks fantastic on melanin. Whether it’s a linen shirt from Dura Poa or a cozy oversized sweater from Think Twice, ultramarine offers versatility.

What I admire most is how youthful Kenyans are incorporating these colors into their outfits. On campus, around town, even at home people are mixing these bright colors with vintage and occasionally traditional elements. It’s natural, it’s expressive, and witnessing it brings pure joy.

And let me tell you, these colors do more than just make a fashion statement. They radiate energy. They convey confidence, feel vibrant, and help you stand out in a city that often rushes by too quickly to notice.

My Perspective as Someone Embracing Color

If you’re a guy like me, stepping into this bold color trend may feel a bit uncomfortable initially. But here’s my suggestion:

  • Start small, consider a statement tee or a pair of vibrant sneakers.
  • Balance it out, match bold colors with simple jeans or a clean white shirt.
  • Embrace it, color shines brightest when worn with confidence.

Fashion doesn’t have to be overly complicated. Sometimes, it’s just about wearing a color that evokes a feeling. For me, that’s what bright coral, day-glo yellow, and ultramarine blue have achieved. They’ve revitalized my wardrobe and surprisingly, my outlook as well.

So, if you’re reading this on your matatu or at your office desk, I dare you: try something daring this week. Wear the color. Share the picture. Be the vibe.

As always,

Stay vibrant. Stay Kenyan. Stay Twendekenya.
